Although the United States Postal Service has a long tradition for honoring celebrated Americans with a stamp, few have been artists. Cuban born painter and printmaker Emilio Sanchez (1921-1999) now joins those ranks with the recent release of a set featuring his colorful architectural environments.

Born to an established family in Camaguey, Cuba, he was tutored at home and then studied in the United States where he eventually settled in the earl y 1950 s. Sanchez became well-known for his work that derived from architectural studies that emphasized the pattern and two-dimensional nature of walls, windows, shutters, and awnings. Such explorations bordered on the abstract as a celebration of color, pattern, and light.

Sanchez's work entered many of the most prestigious public and private collections in the United States, and across Centra l and South America, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The University of Notre Dame has a very large collection of prints - many of which were gifted to the Museum by the artist's foundation. Of the 144 examples of his prints in the collection, each of the USPS examples are included.
