Summer Jazz Series: The Merrimans with J.J. Wright and Nick Sednew

-

Location: Entrance Atrium, Snite Museum of Art (View on map )

Due to the extreme heat predicted for Thursday, we have decided to move the concert inside to our Atrium for the comfort of the musicians and the audience.

*Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances the lineup has changed for the July performance.

Spend your summer evening grooving to jazz in the Mary Loretto & Terrence J. Dillon Courtyard. Enjoy a cash bar, freshly popped popcorn, and featured works of art during every concert. Bring your own blanket or lawn.

Stephen Merriman and Mary Merriman operate Merrimans’ Playhouse, a Jazz Performance Venue, hosting concerts of touring artists and Jazz Open Sessions. In the spirit of the open session, the Merrimans (Stephen on drums and Mary on bass) will join J.J. Wright on piano, and Nick Sednew on trumpet. This performance will highlight their enjoyment of one of jazz's most valued traditions, getting together to play in the moment. This format nurtures not only the active player but also the active listener. The open session gives listeners insight into the "method behind the madness" by putting into practice collectively what they've been practicing individually.

J.J Wright is the Director of the Notre Dame Folk Choir, but also an accomplished composer,  jazz pianist, and recording artist. His style cannot be easily categorized. Trained as a jazz improviser at the New School for Jazz in NYC, he's also passionate about sacred music.

Nick Sednew, a graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, is a well-established and in-demand trumpet player of the Chicago music scene. He is comfortable in the recording studio, small jazz ensembles, big bands, pit orchestras, and horn sections.
