Ivan's Cafe and Bookshop

Ivan's Cafe Raclin Murphy Museum

Located off the central atrium, Ivan's Cafe and Bookshop is your culinary destination as you explore the arts. The cafe is named for sculptor Ivan Meštrović, who, at the invitation of Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., spent the last years of his life as an artist-in-residence at Notre Dame.

More than 500 of Meštrović's sculptures and drawings are in the Museum's permanent collection. Meštrović's sculptures can also be found around campus, including in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, O'Shaughnessy Hall, Eck Visitors Center, and residence halls. Two of Meštrović's pieces are located near the cafe:

  • Head of Moses, a sculpture completed in 1950, is located inside the cafe.
  • Ashbaugh Madonna, carved in 1917 from a single block of wood as the medieval masters had done, is located just outside the cafe.
