Do I need a specific reason to visit the Museum?

No! You can come to wander and explore. We’re always free and open to all. You can attend a program, an event, or a lecture, but you can also visit just to spend some quality time with works of art. Stop by between classes or bring a friend on the weekend. There are so many ways to enjoy the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art.

What do I wear to the Museum?

Come as you are!

Are there places to sit?

Limited seating can be found in the galleries so we encourage you to grab a portable gallery stool from the coatroom on Level 1 and find your favorite spot in the Museum. You can also stop by Ivan’s Café in the atrium which features table seating. Let us know if we can make your visit more comfortable and accessible by contacting Visitor Services.

Can I bring my backpack?

Backpacks and large bags (along with winter coats) can be stored in our coatroom or lockers on the first level. Keeping bulky items out of the galleries helps us avoid any accidental damage to objects on display.

Can my dorm, student club, etc. visit the Raclin Murphy as a group?

Yes, we gladly welcome group visits to the Museum during our open hours.

  • We offer options for guided or self-guided visits. If you’re interested in a tour led by one of our undergraduate Gallery Teachers, email the Assistant Curator of Education, Campus Programs and Student Engagement at rmills3@nd.edu.
  • If you’re interested in collaborating with the Museum for a specific program, check out this Interest Form to begin thinking through the possibilities for a partnership.
  • Check out our Calendar and opportunities for wellness and belonging to discover more opportunities that would be great to attend as a group.

Can I study in the Museum?

Yes! We ask that you store backpacks and large bags in the coatroom, but smaller items, like books and laptops, are welcome in the galleries. You can grab a portable gallery stool from the coatroom. Lastly, we request that you only use pencils (no pens, please!) in order to help us best protect works of art on display. Complimentary Raclin Murphy pencils can be found at the Welcome Desk.

How can the Museum connect to my classes and academic interests?

The Museum’s collection offers opportunities for research, learning, and connections across academic disciplines. Make sure to check out the Teaching Gallery on Level 1 which uniquely highlights the teaching mission of the Raclin Murphy. You can browse various works from the collection online, including objects not currently on view, through Marble (Museums, Archives, Rare Books, and Libraries Exploration). The Marble site is a collaboration with the Hesburgh Libraries, Rare Books, and Special Collections that can be used as a teaching and research tool.

  • Deepen your research for class papers and theses by using objects in our collection as resources for your learning. If you’re interested in receiving support from Museum staff, please contact the Curator of Education, Academic Programs at hoyt.14@nd.edu.

  • For first-year students, learn about the Raclin Murphy’s Essay Competition guidelines.

  • Designed for students of any major, PhotoFutures is a collaborative collecting group that acquires contemporary photography around a different socially-engaged theme each year, which connects to many issues studied on campus—from mental health to climate change to incarceration. Learn how to join.

  • Did you enjoy learning from one of our undergraduate student gallery teachers during a Moreau First-Year Experience, Writing and Rhetoric, Language, or other class visit to the Museum? Find out how you can apply to join the Gallery Teaching program here.
