Object-Based Teaching Graduate Fellow

The Object-Based Teaching Fellow plans and teaches lessons rooted in works of art in the Museum for visiting University classes from every discipline. The position is open to Notre Dame graduate students from the Departments of English and History and will fulfill departmental service requirements for the academic year.

The Object-Based Teaching Fellow is a key member of the Raclin Murphy Museum’s teaching team supporting the Museum’s mission to stimulate inquiry, dialogue and wonder for audiences across the academy through experiences with significant, original works of art. With support from the Curator of Education for Academic Programs, the Teaching Fellow plans and teaches lessons rooted in works of art in the Museum for visiting University classes ranging from Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering to Writing and Rhetoric. The position is open to Notre Dame graduate students from the Departments of English and History and will fulfill departmental service requirements for the academic year. 

Responsibilities

• Design and implement lesson plans that support the learning goals of visiting classes.
• Conduct independent research on works in the Museum’s collection. Meet with faculty members, when necessary, to plan class visits.
• Lead an object-based teaching workshop for fellow graduate students and otherwise act as an ambassador for the teaching resources of the Raclin Murphy Museum.
• Participate in the Gallery Teaching Practicum as an engaged member of and leader within the cohort to learn and develop museum teaching pedagogies.

Requirements

• Demonstrated interest in museums, art, and/or interdisciplinary teaching
• Commitment to the position for the entire 2024–2025 academic year. The Teaching Fellow will begin a few days before the beginning of the fall semester, end on the last class day of the spring semester, and observe University breaks and holidays.
• 10–15 hours of work teaching, researching, and preparing per week. The weekly schedule is variable, and it will be worked out between Teaching Fellow and Supervisor.
• Availability on Friday afternoons from 2:00–4:00 p.m. to participate in and sometimes lead the Gallery Teaching Practicum with undergraduate student gallery teachers
• Willingness to teach beyond the Teaching Fellow’s discipline of expertise and welcome classes from across the academy to the Museum
